KO Education - Indigenous Languages/Perspectives Lead

Keewaytinook Okimakanak Board of Education (KOBE) services the following First Nation schools in Northwestern Ontario:

  • Wasaho Cree Nation School, Fort Severn;
  • Deer Lake First Nation School, Deer Lake;
  • Keewaywin First Nation School, Keewaywin;
  • Ahgwahbuush Memorial School, Poplar Hill;
  • Victoria Linklater Memorial School, North Spirit Lake;
  • Keewaytinook Internet High School (KiHS); and
  • Working in close collaboration with KOSSS and K-Net Services

Keewaytinook Okimakanak Board of Education is currently searching for a 1.0 Indigenous Languages/Perspectives Lead to implement initiatives from the New Paths and First Nation Student Success Programs within the five Keewaytinook Okimakanak (KO) schools. This contract is a one-year term, open to renewal pending funding. KOBE offers competitive teacher salary, based on experience and education, and is a contributing member of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. Please note that KOBE will require any candidate that is offered employment to submit a QECO or OSSTF rating for placement on salary grid.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor of Education degree, or equivalent
  • Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), or able to obtain membership within a timely manner
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum (K-12)
  • Ability to work as part of an educational team with a passion for improving First Nations education
  • Plan independently and implement various educational projects at a high-functioning level
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Being able to read, speak, and write First Nation Languages a necessity (Cree, Ojibway, and/or Oji-Cree)
  • Research independently to explore a variety of best educational practices
  • Provide professional development through a variety of models (online, video-conference, face-to-face, small group workshops, etc.)
  • High level of technological proficiency
  • Meet deadlines

Responsibilities Include:

  • Work on infusing culturally relevant and traditional knowledge within the 5 KO community schools;
  • The lead teacher will fully cross reference Ontario curriculum and address key concepts/themes to introduce, and build upon student prior knowledge within First Nations traditional knowledge;
  • The lead teacher will gather resources to support the lessons for grades Kindergarten to Grade 9;
  • These high interest, culturally relevant kits will support best practices within the KO Board Improvement Plan, such as assessment practices, teaching strategies;
  • The lessons, designed by grade, varying subjects, will be uploaded to the electronic Teacher Planner tool (to encourage the use of this Dadavan application);
  • An emphasis will be made by the First Nations' Language/Perspectives Lead Teacher to design lessons that will support the format of the EQAO Grade 3, 6 and 9 Assessments;
  • As part of the professional learning community model, the 5 KO Native Language teachers will attend two professional development sessions throughout the year, where they can shadow another Native Language expert and gain best practices in enhancing the schoolwide Native Language program (which will include the development of First Nations Perspectives in the curriculum);
  • The First Nations' Language/Perspectives Lead Teacher will implement a professional learning community with the 5 KO Native Language Teachers, utilizing video-conference (and two face-to-face sessions) to expand upon best teaching practices, land-based curriculum approaches, assessment;
  • Travel to the KO communities to deliver professional development; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
